Not only are cassette tapes still alive, they are actually becoming increasingly popular.
In a world where vinyl records are selling like a hot cakes, a new Nielsen Music report says that cassette albums are back as well. Last year, there was a 35 percent increase (or 174,000 albums sold) in the U.S. alone. That’s quite an increase from the 129,000 sold in 2016, which suggests that interest in the “antiquated medium” isn’t going away anytime soon.
Don’t believe us, that’s OK. Just check out the names who have chosen to release projects as cassettes throughout last year: Lil Uzi Vert (Luv Is Rage 2), Tyler, the Creator (Flower Boy), DJ Khaled (Grateful), and Lana Del Rey (Lust for Life).
An insanely large amount of 2017’s cassette sales were also thanks to that little-Marvel-film-that-could, Guardians of the Galaxy. The cosmic adventure film’s soundtracks—Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Mix, Vol. 1—were the three top-selling cassette albums from Dec. 30, 2016 to Dec. 28, 2017.
Are you excited about the cassettes return? What were your favorite tapes growing up?
